At 1,063 degrees Celsius gold begins to melt; the Etruscan goldsmiths who perfected granulation worked so close to that threshold that a single draught could ruin hours of patient placing. Granulation is the art of fusing minute spheres of gold onto a surface without solder, so that each bead keeps its perfect roundness and appears to float on the metal. Today, a jeweller must still control heat with a confidence that borders on instinct; the flame must touch the whole piece at once, not a single section. The reward is a texture no engraving can imitate: a fine, powdery shimmer that catches light from every angle.

The method begins with gold wire clipped into tiny segments, each melted into a sphere by surface tension on a bed of charcoal. A skilled hand may prepare hundreds of granules for one motif, sorting them by size with a brush and a steady breath. These are then placed in a glue of copper compound and natural resin, arranged in patterns that can look algebraic or florid according to the design.
